Foundation Grants
The Foundation for Healthy Communities funds approximately four to six hospital-led community wellness projects annually.  Since its inception in 1994, the foundation has funded 129 grants at a total of nearly $1.6 million for programs promoting healthy lifestyles and improving community health status.  Projects that have been funded include community health needs assessments and primary and dental care clinics as well as project focusing on youth tobacco use prevention, childhood immunization, child abuse prevention, teen pregnancy, osteoporosis education and prescription assistance.

The latest round of grants awarded will help five Ohio hospitals team up with other organizations in the community to combat obesity.  Read more about the 2010 Hospitals for Healthier Ohioans grants.

In 2009, the foundation awarded nearly $100,000 to help four Ohio hospitals engage their local communities in long-term efforts to reduce childhood obesity.  Through the 2009 Hospitals for Healthier Children grants, these hospitals partnered with local school districts, health departments and other organizations to fight childhood obesity.

The 2008 Hospitals for Healthier Workforces grants allowed five Ohio hospitals to team up with local schools, fire departments, manufacturers and nursing homes to fight obesity in the workplace.  With the aid of $100,000 in funding, these hospitals were able to impact the lives of over 600 employees who made positive changes in their health and lifestyle.

Grants Administration
The foundation also plays the role of grants administrator for government funds. Government agencies that seek to fund projects strategically performed by hospitals prefer to contract with the Foundation, which in turn oversees the grant selection process and acts as fiscal agent of the funds.

Since 2001, the Foundation has administered more than $7 million of funds through contracts with government entities. These include grants management of tobacco settlement funds through the Ohio Department of Health, Health Resource and Services Administration funds for Critical Access Hospitals, Department of Development funds for health care workforce development and Appalachian Regional Commission funds.
